UEFA amends player registration rules

Governing body to allow two new players to be registered in 2021/22 club competitions

The UEFA Executive Committee has decided to amend the regulations for the 2021/22 Champions League, Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League to allow clubs to register a maximum of two new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competitions by 1 April 2022 at the latest.

The committee has approved similar amendments to the 2021/22 UEFA Women’s Champions League regulations to allow clubs to register a maximum of two new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition by 7 April 2022.

A UEFA statement said the regulatory changes had been made due to the “uncertainty surrounding the escalating military conflict in Ukraine, which caused a massive and distressing humanitarian crisis”.

The statement added: “To be eligible to participate in the aforementioned UEFA competitions, any such new player shall, among others, be duly registered with the national association as playing for the club concerned in accordance with the associations’ own rules and those of FIFA.”
