Morgan Sports Law wins Kenya CAS case

Law firm acted for players in dispute concerning withdrawal from 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations

Morgan Sports Law has successfully represented members of the Kenyan football team in an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) related to the withdrawal of the team from the first qualifying round of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations.

On 20 January 2022, Barry Otieno, the former CEO of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), withdrew Kenya's team from the first qualifying round of the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations.

However, on 18 February 2022, 22 members of the team appealed against the FKF Decision before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

On 10 June 2022, the CAS upheld the players’ appeal and set aside the FKF decision, holding that it had been issued ultra vires, that is, by a person who was no longer entitled to act on behalf of the FKF.

The Morgan Sports Law team representing the players included partner William Sternheimer, barrister Tom Seamer, and trainee solicitor Ben Cisneros.
