Ricardo Cardoso: Adviser to striker Diego Costa

Updated: Jan 8, 2022

The Porto-based lawyer is likely to be the advising on the former Chelsea striker's latest transfer

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa is set to leave Atletico Madrid after reaching agreement with the club to terminate his contract. Where next for the Spanish striker? Initial reports have linked him with a return to Spain, with a move to a La Liga 2 side on the cards. The adviser Costa is likely to turn to as he finalises the details of any prospective transfer is Ricardo Cardoso, a lawyer based in Portugal.

Here we profile the man who is likely to make Cardoso’s move happen…

Name: Ricardo Cardoso

Role: Sports lawyer at Porto-based CMB Law Firm

Track Record: Cardoso has been a lawyer with Porto-headquartered CMB Law firm for nearly 12 years. Cardoso has not been afraid of controversy and, back in 2017, he launched what was described by some observers in the media as a “scathing attack” on Diego Costa’s then employers, Chelsea FC, and the club’s manager Antonio Conte. Cardoso reportedly said that the club had made it “impossible” for Costa to stay at Stamford Bridge because of the way in which Conte had relayed a message to Conte that he was no longer part of his plans via the medium of a text message.

However, it was reported that Chelsea were “baffled” by Cardoso’s position because, the club claimed, they had made it clear to Costa eight months prior to the text message that he would be allowed to leave the club.

Cardoso’s other football clients include Portuguese club Vitória de Setúbal. In January 2021, it was reported that Cardoso had advised the club in disciplinary proceedings brought by the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
