Abreu Advogados partner Fernando Veiga Gomes hit the headlines during this year’s January transfer window when he advised Mozambican international footballer Reinildo Mandava on his transfer from Lille to current La Liga champions Atlético Madrid.


Veiga Gomes has built a reputation as an adviser to some of football’s biggest stars – in 2019, he advised former Manchester United winger Nani on his transfer from Sporting Lisbon to US club Orlando City.

He leads the sports law practice at Abreu Advogados and has advised on the incorporation and acquisition of sports companies. Veiga Gomes’ clients include football clubs, investors, players, athletes, sports agents and federations.


He is also one of the joint managers of the firm’s Angolan Desk, which frequently advises on foreign investment in the country.


In 1988, Veiga Gomes was seconded to the London office of Herbert Smith Freehills, and, from 2003 to 2006, he worked as an advisor to the board of directors at Portuguese energy company EDP.
