FC Barcelona and Messi to sue newspaper

'El Mundo' publishes details of players contract, understood to be worth more than €555 million

Barcelona Football Club and its former player Lionel Messi have said they are going to take legal action against the Spanish newspaper El Mundo after it published details of the player’s contract with the club.

In a statement, FC Barcelona denied responsibility for the leak and said it regretted that the contract had been made public and that it was “an exclusively private document” governed by the principle of “confidentiality between the parties”.

According to the information published by 'El Mundo', Messi’s contract with Barcelona was understood to be worth a total of more than €555 million, which was paid across four seasons.

The club said it would take “appropriate legal action”, while it is understood that Messi’s lawyers are also planning to sue El Mundo.
